Monetizing LinkedIn: Watching for Opportunities

Many LinkedIners turn off all of their notifications both on their homepage and in the groups. The number of status updates and emails can certainly be overwhelming if you have a large network and or belong to a large number of groups.

However, most people find that it is very difficult to spend a lot of time on LinkedIn – there are many other things you need to do.

I highly recommend that you create an email folder and filter to capture all of the group updates (set them to weekly) thus keeping the clutter in your inbox down. The simple act of going in this folder on occasion and viewing these messages (so they get marked as read) will lead you to spot opportunities to participate in discussions you may not see otherwise.

You will be amazed in doing this how often you run into real business opportunities within these posts. People frequently post questions or even requests for products or services. If you are at least skimming these posts on occasion you will find opportunities.

This is also true of the network updates that post to your homepage on LinkedIn. Most of us get so involved with what we are doing that we don’t look a these items. Again there are many opportunities to be spotted in these updates – everything from groups you might wish to investigate to people that would make excellent connections.

Simply scanning these two areas on some random basis will present opportunities that would otherwise be missed.

One other thing you should do is to watch the key subject areas in the question and answer forums for questions that you can give quality answers to as well as questions that are directly related to the kinds of business you are seeking.

This is just one more little thing that done regularly will result in new business you may not have discovered otherwise.
