The Most Important Thing Your LinkedIn Profile Should Do

LinkedIn is the most powerful business networking resource on the web. With somewhere near 50 million users, most of them professional and business people, you have a tremendous opportunity to get business from LinkedIn.

The kingpin of your success is your LinkedIn profile. Your LinkedIn profile is far more powerful than a normal resume or even your business website because of dynamic nature and the resources it includes.

In your LinkedIn profile you can not only show what you have done, but you can actually display your skills, abilities, and wisdom to the reader via the Question and Answer Forum and the ability to include direct recommendations within your profile.

However, even with all of that power the most important thing your profile must do in a business networking environment is create curiosity and interest that drives the reader to the next step – to visit your website.

Why is this so important, because you’re not likely to make the sale or get the business from your profile; most will need more information to make that decision.

  • Getting the reader of your profile to your website says a number of things.
  • That you have a powerful profile
  • That the reader is likely a quality prospect for your business
  • And most importantly you now have the chance to increase the relationship to the next level by educating the prospect further on what you might produce for them.

You can only guess about the power and effectiveness of your profile. However, if you know that people are coming from your profile to your website you have some measure of how well your profile is working.

You are probably thinking, “Well how do I know if someone comes to the website from my profile?” This is an excellent question. The answer is you need to have some marketing structure in place that will allow you to find out the person arrived and engage them so that you have the ability to follow up. For more on what that is see the article on my marketing site regarding “list building.”

If your profile is properly designed and has the right messaging the people moving to your website will likely be fairly high quality prospects. Driving these kinds of people to your site represents a huge opportunity to gain business.

It is pretty hard to give people the information they need to decide if your products or services will be useful in your profile. Thus you need to drive them to the website in order to further educate them and more importantly to engage them in some way so that you can work on developing a relationship that will get you their business now or in the future.

Your profile is the “headline” that gets people interested in you and your business. It should be focused on driving people to your business assets if you are going to maximize your ability to get business.

Finally, you must make sure there is a call to action not only on your profile that moves people to the website, but on the website so that they take action when they arrive.

Hi Flyn, my name is William Darling. I am a nonprofit and small business consultant with a strong background in law, research and organization development. Your post made it clear and simple as to what’s “the most important thing your Linkedin Profile should do.”
I have been a member of Linkedin since the beginning of the year but have not really been active until about 2 weeks ago. I am now fully committed to Linkedin as a business marketing tool.
Thank for helping me understand the importance of having a strong profile. Oh, by the way, I just bookmarked your blog site.
