LinkedIn Success Starts with the Right Mindset

What follows is a partial (edited) excerpt form the last chapter of my Power Networking Profit System for LinkedIn Course. (Try the course for $1)

The real key to success on LinkedIn is the right mindset, not only from a networking standpoint but also with regard to five other key areas connected to your activities on LinkedIn.

  • Your networking mindset
  • How you’re perceived on LinkedIn
  • The quality of your network
  • Your use of the tactics and strategies to engage others
  • Visibility
  • Accessibility

Your Networking Mindset

The most important factor in your success on LinkedIn is your networking mindset. If you take the wrong approach you will severely limit your potential. If you irritate or prospect your connections you will not only close yourself off from their spheres of influence but you will develop a poor reputation that will make progress very difficult if not impossible.

What is the correct mindset? The correct mind set is that you approach each person with the idea of becoming and invaluable resource. Being and invaluable resources is not about the products and services you offer – that’s prospecting. It’s about offering value.

A little thought will produce many other ways to accomplish this objective.

How you’re perceived on LinkedIn

Obviously the first point is a big part of your perception on LinkedIn. The second part of that perception is based on what others see you doing. This mostly relates to communications and more specifically to the posts in groups and Question and Answer forums in the form of questions and answers.

The first and most important thing is that any efforts to “gain business” directly from another LinkedIner should NEVER be publicly visible. As mentioned earlier in the course you need to be private even when the poster is requesting solicitations.

You also need to leverage that type of question whether you can provide the service yourself or not. This is done by helping with the decision or evaluation of a resource as explained in the chapter on answering questions.

Any deviation from this approach will stain how others perceive you. That change in perception will change the way in which they approach and deal with you in the future.
