A Safe and Simple Way to Announce Things on LinkedIn

I received an email this morning from a fellow wishing to connect and with a question about sending his connections an announcement regarding his website.

His original intent was to send a mailing to his connections. As my regular readers are aware this is something I highly recommend against. In answering his question I though that you, my readers, might be interested in a simple strategy for making such an announcement.

First let me say that if you have a rolodex of very close friends and business associates, and I stress very close, you can certainly send these folks a note re whatever it is you wish to announce.

However, with your LinkedIn network you must be far more careful how you handle this announcement. Some of the people in your network will likely be casual acquaintances and some may even be people you are connected to that don’t even really know you. If you send these folks an announcement you will likely get some percentage that are annoyed or worse yet report it as SPAM.

Though whatever you have to announce may seem interesting and valuable to you, many of your connections may not have the same impression. So, be careful. It is not just the fact that some will be upset; it’s that by upsetting them you take away the real image you wish to portray – being an invaluable resource. And that image will be very hard to re establish with someone you’ve irritated.

My simple system

First off you can use the website links to help you out. By creating a title to the link such as “New Resource” or “Free Seminar” you can catch the attention of many of your profile visitors.

Second, you can announce it in the “what are you up to” section of your header. This announcement will show up on the updates sections of all of your connections.

Third, you can add a sentence or two at the top of your profile summary and in the “Contact Settings” sections of your profile. This again will catch many of the visitors to your profile.

Finally, you can create a question around the subject of what you wish to announce. This requires a little creativity as you don’t want to create a “prospecting” question. Then you can offer that information within the question.

For example if you have a new website you can simply ask your fellow LinkedIners if they would give you their feedback on your new site. You could even be more specific if you wish about what type of feedback you’d like. This is just one example of the type of things you might do with a question.

Summary

This is a simple and safe way to let lots of folks know what you’re up to. I highly recommend this over send a mass mailing to your connections.

Flyn is addressing a key concern about effective use of LinkedIn capability to stay connected that’s easy for you and has a ‘soft’ landing on the receiver. I’m going to give his suggestions a try. Thanks, Flyn.

I don’t understand the final suggestion to use social media icons to let others know about this article. How do the social icons work?

Excellent advice and one that I teach in my online classes for business execs locally. People who tend to blast information into my inbox are very quickly deleted, or worse, blocked.

Thank you for the advice. I am a new member to Linkedin and did not realize the error of my ways. Thank goodness I have only contacted a few members. I will use my new knowledge and pass it on…
