Maximizing the Specialties Section of Your LinkedIn Profile

Like most of the rest of your LinkedIn profile the summary section has a limited amount of space in which to describe your business or assets. You want to put the maximum amount of information in your profile and you want the information focused on what you have produced.

The most compelling message for a prospect in any sales presentation or marketing piece is: “What’s in it for me?” People don’t care what you did or how you managed; they care about what you’ll do for them.

The summary section of your LinkedIn profile is the one place where you get to do a real job showing others what you or your business is all about. However, there is very limited space to work with especially if you use subject headers which take up more characters and lines.

The secret to maximizing your summary is to maximize the “specialties” section of the summary. This is the place to list your actual skills. Once again you want to do this from the view point what you’ll produce if at all possible.

If you have written your work history effectively you should have described numerous things that you produced and in that process referred to the skills that made it happen.

You can maximize the specialties of your profile by using it to list these very specific skills. This is especially true if you have unique or extensive skills that may be superior to your competition.

For example:

If you have claimed in your profile that your leadership activities were responsible for a specific success, you can now describe those leadership skills in the summary specialties section of your profile.

You always want to think of your profile as telling a story. The more you can tie the different sections together the more powerful your message will be. A message that is repetitive and consistent will have more impact than a fragmented one.

Taking this approach will give you more room in your summary to make your case for your business or personal skills.
