How to Use the Contact Settings Section of the LinkedIn Profile

Most people on LinkedIn I am sure underestimate the value and use of this section of the profile. I personally believe it is one of the most important sections of your profile and an important part in reaching out to others.

This section is designed to be a statement of your reasons and desires with regard to being contacted by others on LinkedIn.

You should put the following in your contact settings section:

That you are an open networker and will accept all invitations, or if you wish that you aren’t and specifically who you do want to invite you. I don’t recommend the latter option.

Who you would really like to connect to – do not state this desire in prospecting terms such as “I’m looking for people interested in help with their investments.” State it in terms of professional interests and networking opportunities.

An offer of value to those that would connect could be advice, a report, or a resource, or even a connection, but it should be something of value you can offer to your connections.

Information on how people can get a hold of you or connect. DON’T put your personal contact information here as that violates LinkedIn policy – send them to your Twitter account or a web page where you can give out that information without risk to your LinkedIn account.

A Strong Recommendation – ALWAYS read this section of the profiles of those you plan to invite or reach out to. You may get information here that will be of help or even save you problems.

Hi Flyn;

These are great tips.
Have you explored alliances with LinkedIn “power user” consultants as a monetization strategy?

Would be happy to discuss.
