Making Recommendations on LinkedIn
Many people on LinkedIn are trying to get lots of recommendations for their profile. This is totally understandable but you do need to use caution in helping them out.
If you recommend lots of people it begins to look like you just recommend anyone. This is even more of a problem if when they get to the profiles of those you’ve recommended and find out that you have been recommended by the person that you recommended.
There are cases where cross recommendations are perfectly valid and I have some of these myself. However, to many cross recommendations begins to look like you are simply trading pats on the back and it weakens the value of both your recommendations and those you have received.
You should only recommend someone that has proven themselves to you in some way. Don’t recommend anyone unless they worked for or with you in a situation where that recommendation is credible.
When you recommend someone you put your name on there products. If they don’t deliver, you’re going to look bad. This is why you should never recommend someone you don’t know and have experience with their work or product.
Make your recommendations carefully so they carry weight and be careful about lots of cross recommendations that make it look like you’re simply trading in them.
