The LinkedIn “Contact Settings” Section of Your Profile
Here are some quick tips to help you maximize your use of this portion of your LinkedIn profile.
Your contact setting is actually quite an important part of your profile and is underestimated by many. The reason being; if you’re a smart networker, you will check this part of the profile before attempting to connect or make contact with someone.
Why? Because it is here that the information about who you want to engage is (should be) listed. This is the place to tell people how to get connected, who and why you want to be connected.
If you believe, as I do, that your LinkedIn profile is simply a billboard ad that resides on the LinkedIn site, then you understand that you want to put in this section of your profile all the relevant data as to what kinds of people you specifically wish to connect to. You also want to indicate here if you are an open networker (recommended) and make clear that you won’t IDK anyone that invites you.
This section also has some interest category boxes that you can check to specify your desires. I suggest to you that you check all the boxes yes, even if you’re not really interested.
Why open yourself to communications you don’t want? Because you never know where such a communication might lead and it gives you the chance to engage another person on LinkedIn. Since you don’t know what value that person might provide you, you certainly don’t want to pass up the opportunity to connect or engage.
Summary
The key to LinkedIn is reaching out in all the various ways that are available. By checking all the boxes you at least get the chance to engage people that you might not have otherwise – and isn’t that what networking is all about – engaging others.
By telling people in this section of your profile exactly what you are looking for they have a better chance of helping you find it and knowing why they might wish to connect or not.
In a sense, this is the invitation section of your profile – it tells others to engage and why.
