Some Very Simple LinkedIn Visibility Tactics You Can Use Everyday
As I have said many times before networking is all about exposure. You get more connections so that you can have exposure to their spheres of influence. You participate in LinkedIn and the groups for the same reasons.
Here are a couple of very simple things you can do on a regular basis to increase your visibility on LinkedIn.
Question and Answer Forum
I would assume most people already know this. Answering at least a couple of questions every day will keep you in front of your network and the LinkedIn population as this action is posted to updates. Group discussions also count, but I suggest you find the groups where the discussions are active, many are not.
Use Short Paragraphs and Sentences
Many people don’t know this trick. If you use shorter sentences and especially shorter paragraphs more people will read what you write. This goes for all of your writing on LinkedIn and in any other marketing you might do (Your resume, website, brochure.).
Yes, you do get the visibility just being there, but using this tactic gets people to take the next level of involvement with you by actually reading your stuff. Seeing your name is one thing, engaging your thought is even better.
This works because people are intimidated by very large sections of text with no white space. Short sentences work to keep people reading as they are easier to read. Doing both of these reduces the intimidation factor and will ad to you visibility.
Profile Updates
As with questions, updates to your profile are posted to the update sections of your network’s home page.
Since profiles are very limited in size any way this is a good excuse to rotate in an out different material. You can do this every couple of weeks. You will find that just reading your profile two weeks latter reveals little touch up things you can do to make it better.
The other thing you can do here is rotate and change your picture. Remember to only use current pictures of yourself or you’ll be risking the wrath of LinkedIn management for violating the user agreement.
What are you working on now?
This too is a very good way to stay in front of your network. Remember when posting to frequently make comments that provide value to others – a link to an article or resource works great. You can even promote your own assets but make sure they are information not selling assets. Example; an article on your blog would be good, but a sales landing page with your newest special would not.
Complements to your network
This is also something I don’t think most people do. I have gotten on occasion a complement from someone in my network but not to often. It makes and impression.
As you are moving around Linked in you will run into people in your network that have made various posts. If you truly find the post of value, click to that person’s profile and use the “Send a message” function to send them a complement. Other types of acknowledgements are great too. No selling of course.
Sometimes in doing this you’ll find yourself engaged in a conversation with the person – the value of this is you are now building a relationship that’ll give this connection more value to your network.
This is a great precursor strategy to use with someone you want to engage as it lets them get to know you. You can even go look for things in there profile such as answers to questions.
Summary
I know these are dumb-stupid-simple things that might at first glance seem obvious, but it is also a fact that most people don’t do them. The good news there is if you do them you will raise your own visibility.
Remember that it is lots of little things that make up big ones. A big advertising campaign isn’t composed of an ad the size of the Sears Tower, it is a campaign that hits many different individuals usually by being visible in many different markets.
Do the little things and you’ll make the big difference.
This has reminded me of something that has been really useful in my life – I will share it in tomorrows post – a little self development lesson. There in nothing like improving yourself for improving what you do.
